The voluntary recall, including 790,000 U.S. vehicles, will begin in April and expands on two 2006 recalls, spokesman Keith Price said yesterday in a statement. The affected vehicles are a range of 1999-2006 Jetta, New Beetle and Golf models. The malfunctioning switches can keep the lights from illuminating when drivers apply brakes, potentially leading to a crash, Price said. The brake lights also may stay on even when the car's engine is turned off, he said. The latest flaw adds to four years of brake-light difficulties for Volkswagen, based in Wolfsburg, Germany. Since 2003, the company has recalled 1.3 million vehicles for faulty brake lights, including two separate announcements for Jettas and New Beetles last year. Volkswagen dealers will repair the brake-light switch at no cost to customers, the company said in a statement. All the vehicles recalled since 2003 were made at the Volkswagen plant in Puebla, Mexico, Price said. The models are the 1999-2005 Jetta, 2002-05 Jetta Wagon, 1998- 2007 New Beetle, 2003-07 New Beetle convertible, 1999-2006 Golf GTI and the 2004 R32. Volkswagen has notified the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in Washington about the voluntary recall. The agency had no immediate comment.
