Rumours: The tale of 2 logos - Is it taking inspiration, theft or just laziness?
Posted on Sunday, February 18 @ 21:38:15 by admin

Heard a rumour lately? Some say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but we at .net Towers think this example is taking the biscuit somewhat and comes under the banner of 'copyright theft'.

It appears that a new UK based New Beetle club has just launched a set of calling cards that look surprisingly similar to the ones used by the well respected and long running Beetles.de New Beetle club.

We first became aware of this example of copyright theft when we were shown a copy of a logo that we were told was to appear on club merchandise, but were willing to give them the benefit of the doubt thinking it might be just an initial concept. It has since come to our attention that the club concerned have started to produce calling cards with a logo that is too close to Beetles.de's to be a coincidence.

Whilst the logo has been changed slightly, with the addition of a spoiler, aerial and larger wheels, it is quite clearly a blatant rip-off of the Beetles.de logo that has been appearing on their club website and merchandise for a number of years.

The Beetles.de calling cards:

And the calling cards of the offending club:

Is it taking inspiration, theft or just laziness?

After speaking to the designer of the logo, it has now been substituted with one that was designed previously. I think this draws a line under the incident.
